Our Weekly Newsletter 10/15

Hello

Welcome to our very short week!  As a reminder we do not have school this Thursday or Friday. I hope you all enjoy your long weekend!

This week we are reviewing the letters 'S' and 'P'.  Please point out these letters/letter sounds everywhere you can.  In math we are working on the numbers 0-5.  Please have your child practice counting this week.  For example, if they are setting the table, have them count how many forks they set out, etc....

Homework

Homework looks different this week because of our short week.
1. Practice counting to 100
2. Complete the review handwriting page
3. Read 10 minutes a night and fill out the reading log
4. Learn your address
5. Make an evacuation plan
6. Check for smoke detectors
7. Put a flashlight in your room

Parent Teacher Conferences
Please make sure you sign up for parent teacher conferences as soon as possible.  There is a sign-up sheet outside our classroom door that is filling up fast.  Thank you to all of you who did so already!

Johnson Family Farm
We will be heading to Johnson Family Farm on Thursday, October 25th.  We will be leaving school at 11am and returning by the end of the school day.  When we arrive at the farm we will eat lunch and then have our tour.  We have a lot of adults accompanying us on this trip so if you were planning on attending but haven't let me know yet, I would encourage you to look at our next field trip on November 14th and consider driving for that field trip. The cost of the trip is $7 for each child and adult that is going.  Please send the money and permission slip with your child to school by this Wednesday.

Harvest Party
We will be having a harvest party in class on Wednesday, October 31st.  The party will begin at 1:45 and end at 2:45.  We would love to have some adult volunteers come and help with food and/or lead a center, so please let me know if you are able to come.  A sign-up sheet for food will be posted soon.  We don't celebrate Halloween at TLCS so the students are asked not to wear their Halloween costumes (if they have one) to school.  Since we are celebrating the harvest, however, I am encouraging all the students to come dressed as a farmer on that day.  This can be as simple as a flannel shirt and jeans.

Shutterfly
Hillary Dixon has graciously offered to set up a Shutterfly website for our class.  This is a private website that allows us to share photos, contact information, sign-up sheets, and volunteer schedules.  She will soon be sending out an email inviting you to join.  Please do so, as this will allow you to receive classroom updates and to communicate with other parents in our class.

  1. Fire safety put to use
Tonight we were coming home from Awanas at 8:00 and there was smoke near our home. We noticed it was coming from the airport. My husband is out of town, so I was a little nervous coming home with 3 kids and potential fire hazard. The girls went in to the house to check on the pets and were pretty scared. Taylor kept a cool head and said "Call the fireman. We need to go to our safety spot. Get the dogs and I'll go check on GG (my dad who lives in a cabin on our property)." Here with 3 kids, 3 dogs, 2 cats and a senior citizen and Taylor kept the calmest and knew all the right things to do. The safety training made an impression! So proud. It's 11:00 right now and all is well. No more smoke. Everyone is asleep- except Taylor. He just came and asked me if I had called the firemen back yet to make sure our neighbors are safe! What a sweetheart. Laurel :-)
